Redesigning without losing your SEO equity

A practical checklist for preserving rankings while modernizing your website end-to-end.

A redesign is the single most common way businesses accidentally destroy years of SEO work. The site looks better on launch day and quietly loses 30–50% of its organic traffic over the next quarter. Almost every one of those losses is preventable.

Inventory before you design

Before a single wireframe is drawn, export every URL that currently drives organic traffic or backlinks. That list becomes non-negotiable: every one of those URLs must either exist on the new site or 301-redirect to a truly equivalent page.

Skipping this step is how businesses lose rankings for terms they didn't even know they ranked for.

Preserve intent, not just URLs

A redirect that sends every old blog post to the new homepage is technically a redirect and functionally a deletion. Google treats it that way, and so do users. Each redirect should land on a page that answers the same question the original page did.

When the answer no longer exists on the new site, that's a content decision worth making deliberately — not a side effect of the migration.

Ship with monitoring in place

Set up Search Console and rank tracking on the staging domain the week before launch. The first 30 days after a migration are when problems appear, and the teams that catch them quickly are the ones already watching.

If crawl errors spike or impressions drop by more than 15%, treat it as a launch-blocking incident, not a next-sprint ticket.

Key takeaways

  • Export top pages and backlinks before design begins.
  • Map every legacy URL to an equivalent new page or 301.
  • Instrument monitoring before launch, not after.
